Students engage in self-directed STEM learning guided by educators who are effective facilitators of learning.

At Somerset Gables, we strive to ensure that our students are prepared for future educational opportunities and, eventually, careers. Our institution has evolved to meet the contemporary needs of a 21st-century learner. Through the use of more developed STEM initiatives over the past three years, our classrooms have shifted to rigorous, nurturing, student-centered classrooms. Although it is a work in progress, our teachers continue to develop the necessary skills to empower students and pass on ownership over learning to students through continued professional development, communicating a clear vision across all departments, and working in department and grade level teams to share ideas.
On a weekly basis, one would be able to observe students working in small groups or centers to find solutions for different problems related to the concept being learned. That includes time to work in the Creative Station, engage in activities based on the unit being studied, and participate in discussions with peers. Teachers can monitor individual learning by utilizing frequent formative assessments and summative assessments at the end of a unit of study. Through the use of formative assessments, educators can ensure that students are mastering the concepts that are being studied in class. When educators identify students who are struggling for any reason, they are able to implement another method to reach the student before assessing them at the end of a unit. In small groups, teachers are able to target those concepts with the students who need reinforcement. At the same time, other students are provided with challenging activities that promote problem solving and higher order thinking.
Our teachers continue implementing essential changes in the classroom that lead to complete student ownership and student-centered classrooms. The constant desire of teachers to seek the best learning opportunities for our students, through STEM initiatives, is a strength. It ensures that best practices are being utilized throughout and allows students to showcase their knowledge and gain other information through independent research. An item being worked on and monitored is allowing students to take complete ownership over their learning while meeting specific goals and objectives.
